Recently Published Research

Our student partners, under the direction of Dr. Carol Cox, recently had a research study published entitled, “Long-Term Care Administrator’s Perceptions of the Ombudsman Program in the State of Missouri”.  This five page study may be found in the Journal of Elder Abuse and Neglect – An International Journal”, Volume 21, Issue 1 – January-March 2009.  This study was enabled by a grant from the Vivian J. Roller Foundation, an affiliate with the Missouri Coalition for Quality Care – http://www.mcqc.com. or http://www.advocatesforseniors.org.

Dr. Cox Receives Prestigious Award

Dr. Carol Cox, the mentor of our student partners, Eta Sigma Gamma, recently received a ten thousand dollar award from the “Walker and Doris Allen Fellowship for Teaching Excellence”.  These fellowships are available thanks to a generous gift from Walker and Doris Allen of Columbia, Missouri.  Walker W. Allen graduated from Truman State University (then Northeast Missouri State Teacher’s College) in 1939 with a BSE degree in Business Education.  Congratulations to Dr. Cox for achieving this distinguished award!

From L to R Students; Emily Krogmann and Maureen Bylina - Far right is Bev Howard, Hosp. Adm

In the year 2001, student members of Eta Sigma Gamma, a national professional health and science honorary, extended their activities by becoming trained as State Long Term Care Ombudsmen.  One of the initial student placements was at the N. E. Regional Health Center in Kirksville, MO.  For five years the students worked closely with Bev Howard, administrator of the swing bed unit and with Nan Blickhan, social worker as well as with other staff members.  Recognizing the significant contribution made by the students, Ms. Howard ordered a display cabinet erected outside her office for use by the student volunteers.  It is cooperation such as this that has helped establish the swing bed section of N.E. Regional Health Center as an excellent source of medical care in the community.  Unfortunately the Student Ombudsman Model was cancelled in 2006 by letter from the Regional Ombudsman Coordinator of Region Five.  Sadly therefore, this hospital based program is no longer in effect.
