Social Security Launches New Spanish Online Services at www.segurosocial.gov 

TV Superstar Don Francisco Helps Announce Retirement and Medicare Extra Help Applications. 

Michael J. Astrue, Commissioner of Social Security, announced that the agency’s most popular online services, the applications for retirement and Medicare and for Extra Help with Medicare prescription drug costs, are now available in Spanish.  The new online services are available at www.segurosocial.gov, the robust Spanish version of Social Security’s award winning website, www.socialsecurity.gov .


The 2011 Vivian J. Roller Annual Awards program was held in November, 2011. See the 2001 student winners from Truman State students enrolled in the Health/Science program.

Also visit a nursing home or long term care facility. Volunteer to help at a nursing home or long term care facility. This could be just visiting regularly with the residents, playing cards with them, or assisting the staff. Be active, help our senior citizens have a good quality of life.

All of the homes shown received 5 stars, the highest overall rating, from the federal government's Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. A facility's overall rating is geared to its performance in health inspections, nurse staffing, and medical care. Homes are ranked in tiers according to their star ratings in the three individual areas. Within each tier, the order is alphabetical. Click link to view list.

Need Legal Assistance?

The Missouri Area Agencies on Aging has a website to assist Senior Citizens with legal assistance. The website will provide answers to basic legal questions and provide you with who to contact concerning more difficult questions. They also have a brochure that is available. www.MatchNursingHomes.org - This site allows visitors to find and compare more than 15,000 Medicare-certified nursing homes across the United States. The information is collected and organized at the state, city, and individual nursing home levels.

http://health.mo.gov/safety/abuse/index.php - This site provides information concerning adult abuse, neglect, exploitation and the adult abuse hotline procedures.

Missouri Veterans Homes: www.mvc.dps.mo.gov/homes: This site will provide information on the Veterans Homes in the State of Missouri. Information on where they are located and admission policies.

www.aoa.gov - US Administration of Aging. This is a Federal website that provides information on elder care issues. Has information on Social Security, Medicare, health issues and other information concerning senior citizens.

http://www.memberofthefamily.net/  Member of the Family provides information about 16,000 Medicare/Medicaid-certified nursing homes in the United States, including easy-to-understand reports based on recent government surveys. We also compile a National Watch List of homes recently cited for violations or that have had substantiated complaints made against them. Additionally we maintain an Honor Roll of facilities found to be deficiency-free.

Advocates for Seniors - www.advocatesforseniors.org The website of the Vivian J. Roller Family Endowment which is part of MCQC. Grants awarded from the Endowment are administered through MCQC for eldercare related education and outreach projects.

2010 Krambeck Award

MCQC is happy to announce that the 2010 Krambeck Award has been awarded to JoAnne Morrow.

Ms. Morrow has served many years working for the elderly and handicapped of Missouri. She served as an attorney for the Missouri Department of Social Services working on eldercare issues. She was responsible for initiating legal action against deficient nursing homes in Missouri. She provided legal assistance to staff at DSS in dealing with problem nursing homes.

She has served on the MCQC in many capacities during her long tenure on the board. She has appeared on radio and television, appeared in court on cases, working on individual cases and other issues involving the elderly. Although she finds herself buried in work at Legal Aid of Eastern Missouri, she continues to serve as President of the MCQC Board. She truly goes beyond the call of duty.

IN MEMORIAM

David Kephart

August 21, 2010

David F. KephartDavid Kephart, an integral part of MCQC and a key figure in the establishment of the Vivian J. Roller Family Endowment, passed away on August 21, 2010 in Bloomington, IL. after a lengthy illness.

David was the eldest son of Vivian Roller who died in a Kahoka, MO. nursing home as a result of elderly abuse and neglect in 2000.  Upon her death her 13 children established the Roller Family Endowment in her honor with the goal of improving the quality of care and the quality of life for residents in long term care facilities and the disabled.  The Roller Endowment became a part of MCQC in 2002.

David and other family members, working with MCQC, have  established a grant and award program to fulfill their mission  To date, three grants have been given since the inception of the program and  thirteen cash awards have benefited students from the Eta Sigma Gamma Science Honorary of Truman State University in Kirksville, MO.  Others  have also been recognized for their service to the elderly.

David retired from Illinois State University in 2000 and had served as a volunteer ombudsman for the elderly and disabled for many years.
